Pilsner is the world's most popular beer style, known for its light color, fresh flavor, and distinct hopping. Its roots date back to 19th-century Bohemia, the region of what is now the Czech Republic, where it was developed in response to the dark and cloudy beers of the time.
Pilsner history
Pilsner originated in the city of Plzeň in 1842, when Bavarian brewmaster Josef Groll brewed the first pale lager. He combined the Bavarian bottom-fermented method with local ingredients: soft water, Saaz hops, and pale barley malt. The result was a clear, golden-yellow beer that stood out from the dark beers of the era. This beer is now known as Pilsner Urquell, and it laid the foundation for the modern pilsner style.
The new style of beer quickly gained popularity outside Bohemia, and its fresh, dry, hoppy taste delighted drinkers all over Europe. By the end of the 19th century, pilsner had become an export draw, and numerous breweries in different countries began to brew their own versions. The pale lager gradually replaced many traditional local beer styles, and pilsner became a kind of standard in the beer world. Even today, most lagers produced around the world are based on this classic – although not all follow the original recipe or hopping method.
Pilsner as beer
Pilsners are typically clear, pale yellow beers, with an alcohol content usually ranging between 4 and 5 percent. They are characterized by clear hopping, which brings out floral and spicy aromas. Czech pilsners, such as Pilsner Urquell, use a lot of Saaz hops, which gives them a soft, round hop profile. German pilsners, on the other hand, are often drier and sharper.
Pilsner in Finland
In Finland, pilsner has traditionally been called “pilsneri”, referring to a milder beer with a maximum strength of 2.8 %. This was partly due to previous alcohol legislation, where the categories of mild beers also affected product labelling. As a result, the word “pilsneri” took on a slightly different meaning in everyday language than elsewhere in Europe.
Today, the term is used more broadly to describe beers of this style, regardless of their strength. More and more Finnish microbreweries are producing modern, international-style pilsners that combine tradition with bold new interpretations. A quality pilsner is also an excellent gateway to the world of beer for those looking for a balanced, approachable yet characterful drink.
